Sicily Culinary and Cultural Tour
June 14 - 22, 2009

Tour is limited to no more than 10 participants the small size will give you the personal attention that is not possible on larger tours. Susan Baldassano and her husband Jeff Rickin, co-owners of To Grandmother's House We Go Cooking Tours, will personally lead the tour along with and Sicily based guides.

Tour price $3,250, includes everything as listed in itinerary below. Air fare is not included. Please click on "Terms/Conditions" below for full payment information.

Transfers to and from Catania Airport are included for those arriving on June 14th and departing on June 22nd.

Accommodations are at L'approdo Bed and Breakfast located on the water on the lovely island of Ortigia. For additional details click on "Accommodations in Sicily" below.

Rooms are double occupancy with limited singles available, Single supplement is $500.
Itinerary :

Day 1 Sunday, June 14th - Arrival Day, Welcome Aperitif and Dinner
To Grandmother's House We Go will meet you at the airport and have transport available to Ortigia Check in at L'Approdo delle Sirene, a beautiful B&B right on the marina in Ortigia. Welcome aperitif and buffet dinner at the B&B.

Day 2 Monday, June 15th - Ortigia Market, Walking Tour, Lunch, First Cooking Class
Sue will lead the group on a morning visit to Ortigia's colorful outdoor produce and fish market. Then a guided walking tour through Ortigia: its rich history, palaces, narrow lanes, shops, glorious piazza with the columns of the Temple of Athena still to be seen in its church. We will complete our walking tour with a visit to the mikvah, Jewish ritual bath, the oldest in all of Europe dating from the 6th century. Lunch will be prepared by Fiora at L'approdo B&B. Early evening we will have our first Cooking Class, featuring local fresh fish, with Alessia. Dinner of fish dishes prepared at the class.

Day 3 Tuesday, June 16th - Archaeological Park, Lunch, Afternoon Free, Dinner at Giussepina's
Morning guided tour of the Archeological Park in Siracusa, to see the fabulous Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius, Roman Amphitheatre, and more. Lunch at B&B prepared by Fiora. Late afternoon free to explore Ortigia on your own. Dinner at the home of Giuseppina, a Sicilian home cook and cooking teacher, who will prepare a seafood meal complete with wine and a sampling of her own homemade liqueurs.

Day 4 Wednesday, June 17th - Mt. Etna, Murgo Winery Tasting and Lunch, Couscous Dinner
After breakfast we will leave for Mt. Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. Light lunch with wine and olive oil tasting at Murgo Winery in the foothills of Etna. Alessia will prepare us a typical fish couscous dinner reflecting the Arab influence in Sicilian cuisine.

Day 5 Thursday, June 18th - Modica, Dairy Farm, Cooking Class, Homemade Liqueurs
We begin our day in Modica for a visit to the famous Bonajuto chocolate shop and a walking tour of the town. A short drive brings us to a working dairy farm for brunch which features fresh ricotta and other homemade specialties. Evening cooking class at Giuseppina's home which will feature pasta, dinner included. You will have the opportunity to purchase some of Giuseppina's homemade liqueurs.

Days 6 Friday, June 19th - Caltagirone, Ceramics, Feudo di Butera Winery
Caltagirone is the city that is synonymous with ceramics in Sicily. We climb the ceramic decorated steps and visit several of the artists in their shops. Then its on to Feudo di Butera Winery for lunch and a tasting of their Insolino and Nero D'Avola wines in their beautifully restored dining room followed by a tour of the winery. Dinner will not be included.

Day 7 Saturday, June 20th - Buscemi Folk Museum, Corsino Bakery, Cooking Class
Our first stop will be the folk museum in the town of Buscemi. Our guided tour of the town is a trip back in time to the way of life of the 19th c. and before. Then on to Palazzolo to Corsino Bakery for a demo of their famous cassata cake. Lunch at Corsino. Early evening we will have a cooking class with Alessia including dinner.

Day 8 Sunday, June 21st - Noto, The Baroque, Vendicari Nature Reserve, Farewell Dinner Today we visit Noto, one of Sicily's signature Baroque towns. There will be a walking tour of Noto with a stop for gelato or granita. Our touring concludes with a visit to the Vendicari Nature Reserve, this protected marshland is home to a restored tonnaro (tuna processing facility) and a beach where we can swim. Picnic lunch provided. Farewell dinner and cooking demo by Fiora in her home..

Day 9 Monday, June 22nd - Departure to Catania Airport.
