Oaxaca, Mexico: Cooking, Crafts, and Cultural Tour
February 21 - 28, 2011

Join us for an authentic Oaxaca experience. There will be no more than 10 participants; the small size will give you the personal attention that is not possible on larger tours. Susan Baldassano, founder of To Grandmother's House We Go Cooking Tours, will personally lead the tour with her husband Jeff Rickin. Susan has led cooking and cultural tours to Oaxaca since 1995.


Seven nights, six full days, fully escorted, transportation via an air-conditioned van with a bilingual guide. Tour price $1,895 per person, based on double occupancy, includes everything as listed in itinerary below, air fare and transfers not included, meals as indicated. Single supplement $200. Accommodations are at Mis Recuerdos a lovely, centrally located bed and breakfast within walking distance of Santo Domingo Cathedral and the Zocalo. The gourmet Oaxacan style full breakfasts are a great way to start each day.

Itinerary :
Day 1 Monday, February 21 - Arrival Day in Oaxaca, Welcome Dinner Check in at Casa de Mis Recuerdos Bed and Breakfast. Early evening walk from Mis Recuerdos to Santo Domingo church then down Macedonio Alcala (tourist walk) to the Zocalo (town square) followed by welcome dinner and drinks at La Abuela Restaurant known for its authentic Oaxacan cuisine, and a view over the Zocalo.

Day 2 Tuesday, February 22 - Our First Cooking Class, Market Visit, Dinner at La Olla After breakfast we will have our first Cooking Class with Nora Gutierrez. We begin with a tour of the Merced Market. Cooking class at Nora's home where she will share with us some of her family's traditional recipes. Lunch included.
Free time to Explore Oxaca on your own.
Dinner will be at La Olla.

Day 3 Wednesday, February 23 - Teotitlan, the rug village, Cooking Class, Weaving Demo An all day visit to the village of Teotitlan, a traditional Zapotec village, famous throughout Mexico for its woven rugs. Our hosts for the day will be the family of Rosario Martinez, a member of one of the distinguished weaving families of Teotitlan. We will go to the molino (mill) to see the grinding of corn for tortillas, visit the village church and have a cooking class with Rosario featuring traditional dishes of Teotitlan. There will be a demonstration of the techniques used in the making of tapetes (wool rugs). Rugs will be available for purchase.
Lunch will be in the family courtyard.

Day 4 Thursday, February 24 - Dominga & her family, Artisanal Cooking, Mezcal Tasting Today our host will be Dominga. . She will prepare artisanal chocolate ground from cacao beans on the metate and her signature drink, chocolate atole. Also, we will make memelitas, small thick tortillas with beans and salsa, quesillo, the Oaxaca string cheese and tamales. The class will be hands-on with opportunity to work with various ingredients. This is an all woman traditional Zapotec home, well known for their stand in the weekly market in Etla. Breakfast and lunch will be at Dominga's home. Early evening we will have a mezcal tasting, Oaxaca's signature drink, refined from the agave cactus.
Evening free, dinner not included.

Day 5 Friday, February 25 - Sierra Juarez Mountains, Herbs, Bread, Lunch at Colibri Today we head out of the city into the Sierra Juarez mountains. We visit Senora Leo who will share with us her knowledge of medicinal herbs and flowers. Our next stop is to see artisanal bread baking. Hand-made bread using a wood-fired brick oven. Lunch will be at Colibri, our host Carmelita's home cooking is a mountain treat. The final stop of our mountain tour is with a family who make the wooden molinillos used to whip up the foam on the many traditional chocolate drinks of Oaxaca.
Dinner is not included.

Day 6 Saturday, February 26 - Crafts Tour, Lunch, Dinner Our first stop will be at the museum in Ocotlan to see the works of the renown painter Rodolfo Morales and the Aguilar sisters, well known ceramicists. Then we go to the home of the Navarro family in Santo Tomas Jalietza. The women of this Zapotec family use the back strap loom to make lovely table runners, belts and other pieces; their brother, Gerardo, is an accomplished painter whose work possesses a vibrant color palette and imagination. We complete our crafts tour at the workshop of Jacobo Angeles one of Oaxaca's best known wood carvers.

Dinner will be at one of Oaxaca's signature restaurants.

Day 7 Sunday, February 27 - Monte Alban, Atzompa - Green Pottery, Farewell Dinner Our final day takes us to Oaxaca's signature archaeological site, Monte Alban, Zapotec ceremonial site, located on a mountain top with breathtaking views over the valley of Oaxaca. There will be a guided tour of the site which includes many archaeologically significant buildings overlooking a large open plaza.
Lunch will be at the pottery market in Atzompa, well known for its distinctive green pottery.
Farewell dinner will be at one of Oaxaca's signature restaurants.

Day 8 Monday, February 28 - Departure Day
Departure provided to Oaxaca Airport with many happy memories, crafts and authentic Oaxacan recipes.

Transfers to and from Mis Recuerdos B&B from Oaxaca Airport are included only if arrival date is Sunday, February 10 and departure date is Sunday, February 17. Tips to B&B personnel and personal expenses, not specifically listed in the itinerary, are not included
